Graduation Requirements

The curriculum is designed to emphasize academic skills in English Literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education and Health.

 Students must meet the following requirements for graduation from OCHS and university   admission:

MathematicsTwo years, inlcuding Algebra IThree years, including Algebra, Geometry and Intermediate AlgebraFour years. Example of course titles: Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus
Social StudiesThree years of History/Social Science, including one year of U.S. History, Geography; one year of World History, Culture, and Geography; and one semester each of American government and Economics.Two years of History/Social Science, including one year of U.S. History or one-half year of U.S. History and one-half year of Civics or American Government; and one year of World History, Cultures, and Geography.Three years.  Example of course titles: U.S. History, World History, American Government , World Geography and Economics 
ScienceTwo years, including biological and physical sciences.Two years with lab required, chosen from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Three years recommended. Four years. Example of course titles:  Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science.
Foreign LanguageOne year of either Visual and Performing Arts or Foreign Language.Two years in same language required.

Two years in same language required.
Visual and Performing ArtsOne year of either Visual and Performing Arts or Foreign Language.One year of visual and performing arts chosen from the following: Dance, Drama/Theater, Music, or Visual Art.One year. Examples of course titles: Art 1, Photography, Art History.
Physical Education Two years Not requiredTwo years. Health/P.E
ElectivesOne year**Three years.Example of course titles: Anthropology, Poetry, Journalism, Film & Fiction, Contemporary Literature.

* Beginning in 2005-06, all students must pass the California High School Exit Examination prior to graduation, in addition to meeting course requirements.

** Must be chosen from approved academic courses in history, English, advanced mathematics, lab science, foreign language, social science, or fine arts.
